Queensland are reeling after reports winger Dane Gagai suffered a finger injury at Tuesday’s closed Maroons training session at the MCG.
Gagai is believed to be in major doubt for Wednesday’s State of Origin opener after reportedly going down with a compound finger dislocation.
Brisbane’s Anthony Milford and Newcastle’s Kalyn Ponga flew into Queensland camp on Monday night as cover for the injury-hit Maroons.
The Maroons were only just getting their head around losing 29-Origin fullback Billy Slater, who made a shock withdrawal on Monday with a hamstring injury.
If Gagai is ruled out Queensland are set to slot pivot Cameron Munster into fullback for Slater, Will Chambers to the wing, utility Michael Morgan to centre, Milford to five eighth and put Ponga on the bench.
Morgan trained at fullback for Slater at Tuesday’s session before media were asked to leave.
Brisbane’s other injury concerns halfback Ben Hunt (thigh) and lock Josh McGuire (ankle) moved freely at their match-eve training session at the MCG.
Slater was present at the training session along with former skipper Cameron Smith.
Queensland begin a new era on Wednesday as they start life without retired greats Smith, Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk.
